Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

A few of the things families ask us most often. If you don't see your question here, we'd love to talk it through — there's no wrong place to start.

Who do you work with?

We support children, teens, and moms — and the families around them. Some people come to us about a child who's struggling; others come for themselves. Wherever you're starting from, we'll help you find the right kind of support.

What kinds of therapy do you offer?

Our clinicians offer relational, nervous-system-informed psychotherapy, EMDR, LENS neurofeedback, parent and parent–child support, and specialized care for early childhood and maternal mental health. The approach is always matched to the person — never one-size-fits-all.

What is LENS neurofeedback?

LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System) is a gentle, non-invasive form of neurofeedback that works directly with the brain's own activity patterns. Sessions are quiet and undemanding — there's nothing to perform and nothing to push through. It's often used alongside talk therapy to support regulation, focus, and resilience, and it's approachable even for young children.

Is LENS neurofeedback safe, and who is it for?

Yes — LENS is gentle, non-invasive, and FDA-registered, with minimal to no side effects, and it's safe for clients of all ages, including young children. Because there's nothing to perform and nothing to push through, it's especially approachable for kids, teens, and anyone who feels easily overwhelmed.

What is a LENS session like — does it hurt?

Sessions are quiet and completely painless. Soft sensors simply pick up the brain's own signals, and the gentle signal LENS sends back is so subtle that most people feel nothing at all during a session — some notice a calm, settled feeling afterward.

How many LENS sessions will I need, and does insurance cover it?

It depends on your goals, and we'll talk it through together — many people notice a difference within the first several sessions, with a typical course running somewhere between 5 and 20. Most insurance plans don't currently cover LENS, but sessions are often eligible for reimbursement through an HSA or FSA. We'll go over the details so there are no surprises.

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a well-researched therapy that helps the brain reprocess difficult or overwhelming experiences so they feel less activating in everyday life. It can be a powerful complement to ongoing therapeutic work.

Where are you located, and do you offer in-person and virtual sessions?

Our office is at 1698 Post Road East in Westport, Connecticut, and we work with families across Fairfield County. We offer virtual sessions, too. For children, we usually like to get a sense of how a child will do with a virtual format before committing to it — some kids do wonderfully on screen, and others find it harder to stay engaged, so we'll talk through what's likely to work best for your family.

How do I get started?

The first step is a free 15-minute intro call — a relaxed, no-pressure conversation to share what's going on and figure out the right next step, whether that's with us or a thoughtful referral elsewhere. You can book it any time from our Book a Call page.

How will I be matched with the right therapist?

After your intro call, we consider your needs, your goals, and what each of our clinicians does best — then match you with the person whose approach fits your family. Finding the right match matters more to us than keeping you in-house.

What are your fees, and do you accept insurance?

We're a private-pay practice — we don't bill insurance directly, which lets us keep small caseloads and give each family our full attention.

Many clients still receive reimbursement, however. If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, it may cover part of each session once you've met your yearly deductible. We're glad to review your plan and explain, in plain terms, what you'd likely pay — and we recommend confirming the details directly with your insurer, as their estimate isn't a guarantee.

How long does therapy usually take?

It depends on the person and their goals. Some clients come for focused, shorter-term work; others stay longer. We'll talk openly about what to expect as we go — and with LENS specifically, many people notice a difference within the first several sessions.

How do I know if The Wave Effect is the right fit for me or my child?

The best way to find out is the free intro call — it's there precisely so you can get a feel for us before committing to anything. We'll listen to what's going on, talk through how we'd approach it, and be honest about whether we're the right fit. And if we believe another practice would serve you or your child better, we'll gladly help you find it — the right fit matters most of all.
